So I want my blog journey to begin with a topic
that is very much my focus at the moment - friendship. This seems very fitting for me because it is
as a result of a precious friendship that my blog even exists.
As defined by the Oxford Dictionary, friendship
means simply:
‘the emotions or conduct of friends; the state of
being friends’
So how then would the dictionary define ‘friend’
‘a person with whom one has a bond of mutual
affection’
The above definitions just don’t seem to adequately
describe to me what a friend or friendship encompasses. But is friendship really that easy to
define.
I think Muhammad Ali says it well in his quote:
“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to
explain. It’s not something you learn in
school. But if you haven’t learned the
meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”
I believe you know when true friendship has touched
you. Every so often the stars will align
and you will be given something special… someone
special. And it is to this we must hold
on to for it is too precious to ever let it slip through your fingers.
In my life, I have been touched on a few occasions
with the gift of true friendship. It has
come in the form of my wonderful husband and true life hero, my beautiful
daughters and those people not related to me whom I am lucky enough to have had
enter my life. You know who you are!
I don’t believe friends or friendship can be so
easily defined. Friendship is not a
bunch of words but a bunch of feelings. I
believe it is a million little things that show friendship. An ear that listens without judgement, a
shoulder to cry on, someone who allows you to be yourself, someone to give you
courage and inspiration where you thought there was none, someone who’s by your
side when others find it inconvenient.
So maybe I need to give the dictionary a break. Defining friendship is no easy task. I do think, however, there were so many words
left out in the dictionary definition. Words like encouragement, commitment,
acceptance, inspiration, hope, fun, peace, forgiveness, laughter and of course
love.
I’m sure you have your own words you’d like to add….
